Health & Safety Officer

PDG Aviation Services is one of the leading onshore helicopter operators in the UK and Ireland, we are looking for a dedicated and knowledgeable professional to join our team and help us maintain a safe and compliant operation for all stakeholders.

As a Health and Safety Officer at PDG Aviation Services, you will play a vital role in maintaining and improving the health, safety, welfare and environmental standards across our operation. You will be part of a small team reporting to the Safety Director.

This is a full time, permanent position based at our Inverness Base located at Dalcross Industrial Estate.

Working Hours:

  • 35-hour Contract
  • Monday to Friday, 9.00am - 5.00pm (some flexibility regarding start/finish times)

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct regular health and safety audits across our locations to identify potential risks and compliance issues
    • Carry out inspections and audits at bases in Inverness (INV), Cumbernauld (CBN)and Wolverhampton (WOL)
    • Circulate reports / actions
    • Monitor progress to closing actions
  • Assist with the development and implementation of health and safety policies and procedures to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements
  • Support the Safety Manager / Director to
    1. Identify changes to regulations, approved codes of practice and industry best standard
    2. Ensure our policies and procedures meet the regulatory requirement
    3. Improve reporting and investigation procedure
    4. Monitor and improve effectiveness of procedures and processes by
      1. Safety Audits
      2. Safety Inspection
      3. Toolbox talks
      4. Personal contact with staff and clients
  • Carry out Risk Assessments and Method Statements
    1. This is almost always a team effort with safety and technical experts working together
  • Carry out COSHH Assessments
    1. Training will be provided
  • Provide training to employees and management teams on health and safety
    1. Assist the Safety Manager / Director to develop and improve the existing training packages
    2. Present the 2 yearly Safety Management System training package to all staff - (classroom/On Line) approx. 3 hours per course / 85 staff in groups of 6-8
    3. Present training packages on PPE/COSHH/Noise etc.
  • Investigate accidents and incidents, document findings and recommend corrective actions
    1. Work within our current procedures to establish root cause, corrective and preventative actions
    2. Monitor actions to closure
  • Stay up to date with changes in health and safety legislation and ensure the business remains in full compliance
    1. Personal study / reading / website trawls / attend seminars
  • Collaborate with management to create and maintain a safety-conscious culture within the organisation
    1. Mostly this requires “spreading the word” by personal contact with staff and clients
    2. Suggest new and improved ways to guide safety culture and affect behaviour
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of health and safety initiatives and suggest improvements
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports related to health and safety activities
    1. Admin duties related to safety, health and welfare – record keeping / filing etc
    2. Assist the Safety Manager / Director to produce safety reports / statistics for staff, clients, management team, authorities and company board

Experience and Skills Required:

  • A recognised Health and Safety qualification, ideally NEBOSH certificate
  • Minimum 1 year experience in a Health and Safety role
  • Extensive knowledge of Health and Safety regulations and best practices
  • Excellent communication and training skills
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety
  • Ideally, have experience of ISO 14001 and 45001

Expected Travel:

  • Cumbernauld Base circa 2 days once per month
  • Wolverhampton Base circa 2 days once per 3 months
  • Client locations across UK and Ireland – usually 1 or 2 day visits with travel
  • Extraordinary events at short notice
